Using a Live Online Proctor (SmarterProctoring)

If your instructor has authorized the use of an online proctoring service for your exam, you will use SmarterProctoring's Live Online Proctoring service. For the Fall 2025 semester, this service is in a pilot phase and is only available to students in specific courses. This is a convenient, flexible option that allows you to take your exam from a private, distraction-free environment. Your exam session is monitored and recorded by a live proctor to ensure academic integrity.

 

Confirm you have access to Live Online proctoring in your course

SmarterProctoring's Live Online Proctoring service is currently in a pilot phase for the Fall 2025 semester. Only students in the following courses are eligible to use this service:

  COM 3332, section 1 ECO 2023, sections 7-9
  COP 3363, section 9 ECO 3041, section 3
  COP 4064, section 1 FIL 2001, section 1
  COP 4521, section 2 MAN 4720, section 1
  ECO 2000, sections 1-4 MAR 3231, section 1
  ECO 2013, sections 6-8 MAR 5849, section 2

 

 

Familiarize yourself with Live Online Proctoring by SmarterProctoring

If you are enrolled in one of the eligible courses, the following steps will help you prepare for your SmarterProctoring exam. For more in-depth instructions, please consult the SmarterProctoring student guides provided by your instructor.

  1. Access SmarterProctoring through your Canvas course. If your instructor has set up a SmarterProctoring exam, you will find a link to the system within your course.
  2. Select Your Proctor. You will be given the option to take your exam in an on-campus Testing Center or to select the "Live Online Proctoring" option. Select "Live Online Proctoring."
  3. Schedule Your Exam. You will be able to schedule your exam session directly with SmarterProctoring, selecting a date and time that works for you within the window provided by your instructor.

 

Make sure your computer meets technical requirements

To have a successful experience with SmarterProctoring, you must have the following technical requirements:

  • Computer: A desktop or laptop computer (Mac or Windows-based PC). Chromebooks are also acceptable. Tablets, phones, and other mobile devices are not compatible.
  • Browser: The Google Chrome web browser. You will need to install the SmarterProctoring Chrome Extension, which will be prompted automatically when you start your exam session.
  • Webcam & Microphone: A working webcam and microphone. These can be built-in or external. They are required for identity verification and live proctoring.
  • Internet Connection: A stable, high-speed internet connection.

 

Review exam guidelines and policies

Always review your course syllabus and the specific exam instructions provided by your instructor. This will ensure you understand all policies regarding permitted resources, exam time limits, and any other specific rules you must follow during the test.

 

Secure your testing environment

Before starting your exam, you must ensure your testing environment meets the following requirements:

  • Take the exam at a desk or table in a private area. The area must be well-lit and free of distractions.
  • Clear your desk and surrounding area of all materials, devices, and resources unless they are expressly permitted by your instructor.
  • Have a valid photo ID ready. This can be your FSUID or any government-issued ID (driver's license, passport).
  • A "room scan" may be required. This involves slowly and thoroughly panning your webcam to show your entire workspace and surrounding area.
  • Disable or remove any browser extensions that are not expressly permitted by your instructor before starting the exam.

 

Fees

Please check your course syllabus for the exact cost of your exams. 

SmarterProctoring charges an administration/proctoring fee based on the exam's time limit, and FSU has negotiated the following costs.  All fees are payable directly to SmarterProctoring.

  • 1-30 min - $13.00
  • 31-60 min - $18.00
  • 61-90 min - $21.50
  • 91-120 min - $24.00
  • 121-180 min - $29.00

Appointments must be scheduled at least 72 hours in advance to avoid additional fees.

  • Scheduling less than 72 hours but more than 24 hours in advance adds $5.00 to the total cost.
  • Scheduling within 24 hours of the exam adds $8.00 to the total cost.
