05/07/2021: New Name and Personal Pronoun options in Canvas

The Office of Distance Learning has enabled two new features in the Canvas learning management system. Updating your preferred name in Canvas just got easier, and you can now select your personal pronouns.

Preferred Name

Canvas now recognizes preferred names. For those of you who have already designated a preferred name using an official process (HR name change request, Student Central, etc.), that name is now your default Canvas name – with a few exceptions:

  • If you have manually adjusted your name in your Canvas account, Canvas will not overwrite the changes you have already made.
  • It can take 24-48 hours for Canvas to transfer your preferred name in your myFSU profile to your Canvas account.

For instructions on updating your preferred name in FSU systems or manually changing your name in Canvas, see How to Change Your Name in Canvas. If you need additional assistance updating your preferred name, please contact ODL.

Personal Pronouns

You can now select your personal pronouns in Canvas. The list of pronouns in Canvas is a result of collaboration between FSU’s Pride Student Union, Office of Student Equity and Inclusion, Student Government Association, Office of Human Resources, and the Divisions of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs. To set personal pronouns in Canvas, see How to Select Personal Pronouns in Your Canvas Account.

Important: MyFSU Student Central also features the ability for students and former students to manage their personal pronouns centrally. Because personal pronouns in Canvas are not yet integrated with myFSU, changing them in myFSU will not automatically change them in Canvas. You will still need to manually select your personal pronouns in Canvas. If you need assistance updating your personal pronouns in Canvas, ODL technical support specialists are available to help.
