There are a few different settings that it's important for instructors to be aware of. The items in this support article are the top concerns that we think instructors may face, and most of these settings are accessible from within Canvas.

How to enable closed captions (CC) for your Flipgrid assignments

Because closed captions are not enabled by default, we strongly recommend that you manually enable them:

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course site that uses Flipgrid assignments.
  2. On the course navigation menu, select Flipgrid.
  3. To adjust course settings, click the pencil icon located on the right of the screen.
  4. Under the Features section, toggle the Captions option to on.

How to adjust Flipgrid notification settings

By default you will get an email notification every time a student posts a video in one of your Flipgrid assignments. If you do not wish to receive these notifications, you will need to change your notification settings.

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course that uses Flipgrid assignments.
  2. On the course navigation menu, select Flipgrid.
  3. To adjust course settings, click the pencil icon located under the course title on the right of the screen.
  4. Under the Features section, toggle the Notify Me option to off.

How to add TAs to Flipgrid assignments

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course that uses Flipgrid assignments.
  2. On the course navigation menu, select Flipgrid.
  3. Select the Add CoPilots to your Grid button at the top of the page to add another user who can administer the Flipgrid grids in your course.

How to remap Flipgrid to your new course site after performing a course copy

When copying your Canvas course from one semester to the next, you will need to update the Flipgrid app installation within your new Canvas course so that it is linked to your existing Flipgrid account and there is a designated grid for your new course site. Follow the directions below depending on whether you are a new or returning Flipgrid user and the type of course copy you intend to use:

Remapping for first-time FlipGrid users copying another instructor's course

Use this workflow to avoid integration issues.

  1. Create your Flipgrid account if you have not already done so.
You will need to use the Sign up with Microsoft option, which will require you to use your unique [email protected] email address as your username.
Please note: Your FSUID is the login name you use to login to myFSU, Canvas, and other FSU applications.
  2. After you have completed the Canvas course copy from your colleague's course site into your new Canvas course site, follow our remapping FlipGrid integration for returning users copying another instructor's course directions.
  3. Follow our directions for transferring assignments between courses.

Remapping for return FlipGrid users copying another instructor's course

After copying from your colleague's course, you will need to update the Flipgrid app installation in your new Canvas course site so that it will connect to your Flipgrid account. You will need your unique Flipgrid consumer key and shared secret to do this.
Quick tip: We recommend that you open a new tab or window so that you can access your Flipgrid account and your new Canvas course site at the same time.

  1. Update the Flipgrid App installation in your new Course site
    1. Navigate to your new Canvas course site.
    2. On the course navigation menu, select Settings.
    3. Select the Apps tab at the top of the page.
    4. Click the View App Configurations button.
    5. Scroll down until you locate "Flipgrid." Click the gear icon that corresponds to Flipgrid and select Edit from the menu that appears.
    6. In the Edit App window that appears, delete the consumer key and paste in your unique consumer key and shared secret from your Flipgrid Account. After you have done this, click the Submit button at the bottom of the Edit App window.
Click image below to enlarge it

How to find your consumer key and shared secret:

      1. In a new tab or window, log into your Flipgrid account.
      2. Click on the account drop-down menu in the upper right corner, then select Integrations.
  2. Make sure that Flipgrid is hidden from your Canvas course navigation menu.
This ensures that your students have to go through your Canvas assignments to submit their videos and that their submissions get pushed to SpeedGrader. If students submit videos from the Flipgrid link on your course navigation menu, then their submission will not show up in Canvas's SpeedGrader.
  3. Follow our transfer assignments between Canvas courses directions to link the individual Flipgrid assignments in your new Canvas course site to a new course "grid" in Flipgrid.

Remapping for returning FlipGrid users copying from their own previous course site or development site

  2. Follow our transfer assignments between Canvas courses directions to link the individual Flipgrid assignments in your new Canvas course site to a new course "grid" in Flipgrid.

Transferring assignments between Canvas courses

Once you've made sure that your new course site is linked to your Flipgrid account, you will then want to link the Flipgrid assignments in your new course to a new course "grid." In Canvas:

  1. Go to any Flipgrid assignment in your new Canvas course.
  2. Click the Create a Course Grid button to create a new grid for your Canvas course site.
  3. Your new course grid will automatically be named the title of your Canvas course site.
  4. Once you have created a new "Grid" for your new course all other Flipgrid assignments within that Canvas course will automatically link to the new Grid you've created.
