Overview of the Media Gallery
Kaltura's Media Gallery feature is a convenient means to store a course's videos and other media within a single repository in that course's associated Canvas site. The Media Gallery is most easily accessible by enabling the Course Media navigation link to the Course Navigation. Course Media can be enabled through the course Settings from the Navigation tab.
Users with a large number of videos may find that they want to provide another layer of organization within the Media Gallery to make it easier to find content associated with a particular topic or unit within the class. You can use playlists within your Media Gallery to provide this organization. Please see our Kaltura Playlist Overview for more information.
Best Practices for Instructors
Simply uploading videos is the first step; however, using the Media Gallery strategically can significantly improve student learning outcomes and navigation.
Pedagogical Organization
- Distinguish My Media from Course Media: Remember that "My Media" is your private storage, while "Course Media" (the Media Gallery) is the shared space where all enrolled students can view published content.
- Sequence with Playlists: Instead of a flat list of files, use playlists to group videos by week, unit, or assignment type to reduce cognitive load for students.
- Contextualize Videos: While the Media Gallery is a great "hub," consider also embedding specific videos directly into Canvas Modules or Pages to provide instruction alongside the video.
Enhancing Student Engagement
- Review Analytics: Use the "Analytics" tab within your Media Gallery to track which students are watching and identify which segments of your lectures are being replayed or skipped.
- Enable Comments: If appropriate for your pedagogy, allow comments on videos to turn the Media Gallery into a space for asynchronous discussion.
