Embedding External Video Materials

Although you can hyperlink to existing video content on the web, embedding it within pages on your course site makes the experience a smoother one for students. You can easily embed YouTube videos in your course site using the Rich Content Editor. You can also embed video content available through the FSU Libraries, such as Films on Demand or Kanopy; see this overview of digital media resources or contact the Library for more information.

Remember that the law requires your course content to be accessible to persons with visual or auditory disabilities, so check to make sure captions are available for any required video content.

Uploading/Recording Media

Whether you create the video yourself or have it produced by ODL Media Services—both described in the final paragraph below—most videos custom-created for your course will be hosted one of three ways:

Kaltura (preferred). Videos uploaded to Kaltura will automatically be machine-captioned, and there are no rights complications such as you might have with services like YouTube. Learn more about using Kaltura. You’ll still need to edit these captions.

Canvas video upload. The Rich Content Editor in Canvas has a “Record/Upload Media” button. There is no machine-captioning option for this, but you can manually add captions as shown in this quick overview.

Note: Do not upload video as Canvas course files or you’ll quickly exceed the 1GB limit per Canvas course.
