Sub-Account Admins: How to Create Attendance Badges at the Sub-Account Level
print icon

Note: This article is intended for Canvas account and sub-account administrators. These permissions will not be available to instructors. Once a sub-account administrator sets up Attendance Badges in a sub-account, instructors will have access to use the badges.

Only attendance badges created at the sub-account level will show up in attendance reports. Creating badges at the sub-account level will require sub-account administrator access. Sub-account administrator accounts are not automatically given to a specific person in each sub-account; FSU's ODL Technical Support creates them on an as-needed basis. Please submit a request if you would like to be added as a sub-account administrator to your sub-account.

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Enter the Admin page from the Canvas global navigation menu.
  2. Select Attendance on the Sub-Account menu.
The sub-account navigation menu with the Attendance option highlighted.
  3. Click the Manage Badges tab at the top center of the page.
The Attendance page interface showing the Manage Badges tab located at the top center.
  4. Press the green Add Badge button to create a new badge.
The Manage Badges screen featuring a prominent green Add Badge button.
  5. In the Add a custom attendance badge pop up window that appears, simply choose a name, icon, and color for the badge. Make sure to press the Save Badge button when you have entered in your badge specifications.

The badge configuration window showing fields for Name, Icon selection, and Color selection.

Note: When choosing icons and colors, it's best to stay consistent with positive and negative feedback. For example, it might be a good idea to have all badges indicating positive feedback (e.g. Works well with students) have a thumbs up, plus, or star icon and use green coloring. All badges indicating negative feedback (e.g. doesn't pay attention in class) have a thumbs down or caution sign, and use red and/or yellow coloring.

Further Resources

Now that you have created a badge, instructors in your sub-account can use attendance badges and run reports that present a nuanced view of attendance in their courses. For more information on how instructors can use attendance badges and run attendance reports, see Canvas Attendance (Roll Call) Tool and Participation Badges.
