Creating Manual Gradebook Columns

Canvas only creates columns in the Gradebook for assignments. If you need to create a column for manual grading (e.g., participation grade), you can create a No Submission or On Paper assignment.

Basic Steps

  1. In your canvas course site, select the Assignments tab from the course navigation menu.
  2. Add a new assignment using the + Assignment button.
  3. Enter the assignment details, including assignment name, a description for your assignment, and any other assignment details such as points, assignment group, etc.
    • Note: When you set the Submission Type in the next step, it's worth noting that No Submission and On Paper submissions still appear to students on their Assignments page. It's worth adding a note in the description of the assignment to let students know whether a submission is required and if so, how they are supposed to submit it.
  4. Set the Submission Type to either (a) No Submission or (b) On Paper.
  5. If you are ready to publish your assignment so it is viewable, click the Save & Publish button. If you want to create a draft of the assignment and publish it later, select the Save button.
    • Note: The Gradebook will display columns for unpublished assignments by default but you cannot enter grades for unpublished assignments.
