Your instructor may require in-class Canvas exams or quizzes using the Respondus LockDown Browser (“Respondus”). Respondus prevents access to other applications, websites, and screen capture tools during tests. If your instructor requires you to test with Respondus, you will need to download and install it on a supported testing device. Respondus is offered by the university at no cost to students. Follow the instructions below to get started.

Getting Started

  1. Review the Introduction to Respondus LockDown Browser for Students video. Note that FSU only offers the Respondus LockDown Browser, not Respondus Monitor, so you will not share your webcam during your exam.
  2. Download and install Respondus LockDown Browser on a supported testing device using the FSU-specific download link.
    1. While iPads are technically supported by Respondus, they are not recommended for test taking in Canvas.
    2. Consult with Case Management Services or University Libraries to lease or rent a compatible laptop on a short-term basis if you do not have access to a supported testing device..
  3. Visit this page again on exam day for a few reminders, and if you run into any trouble, see the Getting Help section of this article.

On Exam Day

  • Make sure your device is fully charged by the time class starts.
  • Bring your FSUCard and/or government-issued ID in case your instructor takes attendance.
  • Arrive on time. Your instructor may give you the access code at the start of class.
  • On your laptop, connect to FSUSecure Wi-Fi to avoid disconnects. You may need your phone to authenticate with Duo Mobile.
  • Plan to turn off unauthorized devices (eg, phone, smart watch, tablet, smart glasses, calculator) and place them, along with any unauthorized materials, into a backpack, bag, or a designated location determined your instructor . Use of unauthorized devices, materials, or websites may result in severe consequences such as receiving a zero on the test and being charged with an Academic Honor Policy violation.
  • Launch the exam from within Respondus (not your regular browser).
