How to Disable Google Translate

If your test in Canvas is being proctored online with proctoring software and you are concerned that using Google Chrome's automatic translation feature will trigger an Academic Honor Policy violation during an exam (especially language placement or proficiency exams), you can disable it using the following steps before you take your exam:

  1. Click on the three dots on the top right of the window and click on Settings.
    Google Chrome Settings menu
  2. Type in Translate in the search field or select the Languages sub-menu from the left-hand menu navigation.
    Chrome Settings menu, Languages sub-menu
  3. Under the Google Translate section of the Languages menu, you have three options:
    1. Toggle off "Use Google Translate";
    2. Ensure no languages are listed under the "Automatically translate these languages" section; or
    3. Add your target language to the section titled "Never offer to translate these languages".

Re-enabling After the Exam

After the exam, you can enable the browser's translation feature by following the steps 1-3 listed above to turn the tool back on.
