What is a Learning Assistant (LA)?

The Center for the Advancement of Teaching is currently piloting the Learning Assistant (LA) program with five departments: Economics, Mathematics, Philosophy, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, and Engineering. If you teach in one of these departments, you may see the LA role as a choice to add in the People tab.

Learning Assistants (LAs) are undergraduates who have successfully completed a course and are subsequently selected by faculty to work with them in the classroom, helping current students engage with course material for better understanding. Through the guidance of weekly preparation sessions and a pedagogy course, the LAs facilitate discussions among groups of students in a variety of classroom settings that encourage active engagement.

For more information about this pilot program, please contact the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at [email protected].
