How to apply Outcomes to a Canvas Rubric

For information on designing student learning outcomes, please visit FSU’s Office of Institutional Performance and Assessment or contact [email protected].

The most common method of using an Outcome is to align it to a Canvas rubric. It is possible to align as many Outcomes to a rubric as desired. These Outcomes can be treated as normal criteria, ungraded elements, or a mixture of graded and ungraded Outcomes.

There are two ways to align an Outcome into a rubric: Align the Outcome directly through an assignment, or align the Outcome through the Rubric Manager.

Aligning an Outcome through an Assignment

  1. Click into your course.
  2. On the course navigation menu, select Assignments.
  3. Click on the name of the desired assignment.
  4. Click on the + Rubric button in the lower half of the assignment's main page to load the menu to create and/or load rubric content.

If you already have a rubric associated with the assignment, then click the pencil icon in the upper right of the rubric to edit it.
  5. Select Find Outcome.
  6. In the pop-up window that appears, select the outcome you want in the navigation pane on the left. In the pane on the right, there is an additional, optional "Use this criterion for scoring" checkbox.

If you want to use the Outcome for grading purposes, then check this box. If you do not want to use the Outcome for grading purposes, then leave the box unchecked. If this box is left unchecked, the point value of the Outcome will not be applied to the assignment's score, but it will still be saved as Outcomes data.
  7. Click the garnet Import button in the bottom right corner of the pop-up window.
  8. Save your rubric. If you have have just created a new rubric, press the Create Rubric button to save it.

If you are updating an existing rubric, click the Update Rubric button to save your changes.

Aligning an Outcome through the Rubric Manager

There are different ways to get to the Rubric Manager in your Canvas course. Which path you use depends on your personal preference:

Access Rubric Manager via Outcomes

  1. On the course navigation menu, select Outcomes.
  2. Click on the "..." button in the top right of the screen. This will open a drop-down menu. Select Manage Rubrics from this drop-down menu. You will then be taken to a page that contains a list of all the rubrics within the sub-account of your course site.
  3. Skip down to the Steps to follow on the Rubric Manager page.

Access Rubric Manager via a direct URL

In your Course Site's URL type "/rubrics" just after the course's site number.
E.g., your course site URL reads: https://fsu.instructure.com/courses/insert_course's_site_number_here/rubrics

Now, follow the directions outlined in Steps to follow on the Rubric Manager page.

Steps to follow on the Rubric Manager page

  1. Either click on an existing rubric to edit it or select the +Add Rubric button to create a new rubric. Please note, if you are creating a new rubric, then you will need to attach the new rubric to an assignment or other gradable item later.
  2. Click Find Outcome to pick an Outcome from the existing list within your course site.

  4. Click the garnet Import button in the bottom right corner of the pop-up window.
  5. Save your rubric. If this is a newly-created rubric, click the Create Rubric button.

If you are editing an existing rubric, click the Update Rubric button to save your changes.
